Obituary for Garold Greenlees

Garold Greenlees
Garold William Greenlees passed away January 8, 2018 at the age of 73. Garold was born on March 28, 1944 in Sewickley, PA to Gilbert William and (Vera) Frances Mohler Greenlees. He lived his formative years in Williamstown, WV where he attended Williamstown Schools. He graduated from Warren High School in 1963. He attended the Academy of Drafting in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Garold married Margie C. Murphy on August 22, 1965. They were married for 52 wonderful years. They had three beautiful daughters and 10 amazing grandchildren. His first priority was spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends where he enjoyed many years of boating on the Ohio River, motorcycle and camping trips, hunting, fishing, ATV riding and anything he could find to do while enjoying the outdoors. His passion was for snow skiing throughout the US, Canada and Europe. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church (Marietta, Ohio). He was also a member of the Marietta Boat Club, Ohio Valley Ski Club, a lifetime member of The Elks Club, and The Ohio River Sternwheel Festival (where he was on the Board of Trustees and was the founder of the Rolling Oldies Car Show). His final years were spent with the love of his life and family spending time at their chalet in Timberline, WV, Bearly Able, and tinkering with his El Caminos. Above all, he made helping others a very special priority in his life.

Garold started his career working with his father at The Greenlees Company (Marietta, OH) building houses throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley. He would later take over the business where he expanded into Commercial Industrial Contracting and Real Estate Development. He is President and Owner of American Star Painting and Coatings. He was a member of the Parkersburg Contractors Association and a member of the International Union of Painters and Allies.

He was prededed in death by his parents, Gilbert and Francis along with several aunts and an uncle.

He is survived by his wife, Margie C. Greenlees: his children: Greta (Rick) Guimond of Marietta, Ohio; Ginger (Chris) Guinther of Marietta, Georgia; Gandee (Mike) Barkley of Morgantown, WV; 10 Grandchildren: Zack Guimond (Davenport, IA), Mollie Mitchem (Boston, MA), Andy Guimond (Marietta, OH), Murphy Mitchem (Lindsey) (Marietta, OH), Garrett, Grant and Griffin Guinther (Marietta, GA), Jackson Licklider, Blake and Grace Barkley (Morgantown, WV). Cousins: Tom and Roger Rowell (Williamstown, WV) and Janice Robinson (Fleming, OH).

Calling hours will be Wednesday, January 10th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm as well as Thursday, January 11th from 11 am to12 pm. A Celebration of Life will follow at 12:00 pm with The Reverend Linda Steelman officiating, at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral, 408 Front Street.

The family wished to extend their gratitude to Jim Schoppner (his buddy), Amedisys Hospice and Home Health (Marietta, OH), Alzheimer’s Support Group (Parkersburg, WV), Steve Westfall and Brian Waller plus many neighbors, family and friends throughout this journey.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation to, a foundation to research a cure for Alzheimer’s (1-800-272-3900, with questions).

Death is more universal than life. Everyone dies, but not everyone lives…Garold lived life to the fullest.
