Obituary

Viola Francis Schwendeman Dennis, 97, of Marietta, Ohio, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Harmar Place. She was born on June 4, 1922 in Churchtown, Ohio, to Frank and Marie Thieman Schwendeman.

She graduated from Waterford High School in 1941 and was married to the love of her life, Ray Dixon Dennis, on November 25, 1946. They celebrated 63 years of marriage before he passed in 2009.

Viola is survived by her four children and their spouses, Bob (Linda) of Proctorville, Ohio, Bud (Mary), Darlene Harris (Don) and Rick (Brenda), all of Marietta; nine grandchildren, Julie Fuller (Chris), Scott Dennis (Stacy), Ryan Dennis (Suzanne), Lindy Lemley (Derrick), Don Harris Jr. (Patti), Lisa Turner (Tom), Jackie Hussey (Steve), Tracy Sparks (Don) and Amy McCracken (Kevin); 19 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; and many special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; granddaughter, Mindy Nicole Dennis; her parents; brother, Dale Schwendeman; and sister, Grace Huck.

Viola was employed during her early life by the Marietta Chair Factory, Pfaff's Restaurant, and The American Pottery. She shared many memories and stories of the hardships of The Great Depression and WWII. She retired from Marietta City Schools and enjoyed many happy years of retirement with her husband. Viola was a wife and homemaker, but most of all a mother and grandmother, where she will be remembered for her famous "grandma's noodles" and her loving gentle spirit. She loved gardening and working in her yard. Viola loved her family and will be dearly missed. A very special thank you to Harmar Place, Putnam Corner nurses, aides and Shrivers Hospice, for their loving and compassionate care.

Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at The Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption, with The Rev. Msgr. John Michael Campbell celebrating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with a Vigil service held at 3:00 p.m.

When I first came to Marietta in 1980 and began teaching at Marietta Junior High school, “Miss Viola”, as I always called her, was one of the nicest people I got to know the year. She was always kind and helpful to me as a new teacher in Marietta, and I’ll never forget the way she welcomed me and helped me my first year. She and “Miss Ethel” came by my room every day, and we’d spend a few minutes talking. I cherish those memories. Later, I taught Donnie, Lisa, and Jackie. In recent years, I thought about her a lot and always wondered how she was doing. I send my most condolences to her family. I will always remember her with great affection. ~Tanya Wilder

Mrs. Wilder, thank you for this beautiful tribute to my Mom. I remember quite well Mom speaking very fondly of you as well. She loved her visits with you and talking about your life adventures. Our kids always spoke very highly of Mrs. Wilder as well. Don Jr. loved Spanish and all three loved you. You inspired all three of them. I’m so thankful for the beautiful people who cross our paths in life. ~Darlene Harris
