Charles Allen “Al” Simmons, 70, of Marietta, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Friday, July 25th, 2025, following a brief illness.
He was born on February 5th, 1955 to Lewis E. (d.) and Mary M. Simmons (d.) of Reno. Al was a 1973 graduate of Marietta High School, where he lettered in football, playing multiple positions (primarily fullback and linebacker). After decades of employment as an Operating Engineer, Al retired in 2007. He was an avid golfer, having at least two aces to his name, and having placed ninth in his flight at the 19th Annual DuPont World Amateur Handicap Championship in 2002. He married the love of his life, Jennifer Wilbanks, on June 27th, 1980.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, of Marietta; his son Darren Allen, of Athens; his daughter, Alaina Kelly (Daniel Haught), of Chillicothe; his grandchildren Callum Odell, Owen Decker, and Isla Mae Haught, of Chillicothe; his sisters Teresa Eddy (Kenneth), Ann Simmons, and Mary Lisa Walker, of Marietta; his sisters-in-law Elise Wilbanks, of South Carolina, and Anita Quigley (Bryan DeWall) and Kris Simmons, of Marietta; and numerous beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Al was preceded in death by his brother Matthew L. Simmons in 2023.
A visitation with the family will be held at Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, 408 Front Street, Marietta, on Saturday, August 2nd, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with a service to follow the visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that a donation be made to a charity of your choice in his honor.
