Frederick William Scharff, 72, of Parkersburg, WV, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Parkersburg, He was born October 7, 1938 in Sewickley, PA to George William and Mary Louise Tomana Scharff. He was a 1956 graduate of St. Mary Catholic High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Fred had retired in 2000 from Plumbers & Pipe Fitters #168, working most of his career as a General Foreman at Dravo/Connex until its closing. He was a member of the American Legion Post #15 in Parkersburg and was a former member of Moose Lodge #1823. Fred was a former member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He was an avid golfer, playing in many leagues in the area. Fred made a hole-in-one at Worthington Golf Course several years ago. He also enjoyed gardening and cooking. Fred is survived by his wife, Elaine Surbaugh Scharff, four children, Steve Scharff of Marietta, Nancy Duquette (Donn) of Marietta, Kathy Patalano (Kevin) of Burning Springs, WV and Brian Scharff (Mandy) of Marietta, their mother, Marilynn Peoples Scharff of Marietta, two step sons, Todd Surbaugh of Cumming, GA and Tom Surbaugh (Gretchen) of Indian Land, SC, grandchildren, Tori Scharff, Shelby Offenberger, Serena Patalano, Caleb and Maddi Scharff, Tommy Duquette, Aaron and Emily Mowery, and Alexis and Logan Surbaugh, three sisters, Christine McKenzie of San Diego, CA, Debbie Dennis of Logan,OH, Petey Scharff of Marietta and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Phyllis Meister, great grandson, Andrew Scharff-Caldwell and a step daughter, Terry Mowery. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2011, at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mark Houser officiating. Friends may call on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made to the Strecker Cancer Center.
