Jack I. Powers

Jack I. Powers, 83, of Marietta, went to be with the Lord on May 7, 2012, from Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born June 9, 1928 in Columbus to the late Robert Powers and Helen McGrew Fisher. He lived in Bartlett as a young child, then moved to Marietta and attended Marietta City Schools. He entered the Navy at age 17, and completed two years of service. He was a flagman on the USS Springfield. After the service, he immediately began working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, diving and repairing locks and dams. He married the love of his life, Joan L. Cheeseman on September 11, 1948. He became Lockmaster at Lock &Dam #17, and later transferred to Willow Island in 1975, retiring in 1983. Jack also worked at J & G Furniture and Weihl Furniture. After his retirement he worked for Parking Partners in downtown Marietta for 25 years. He was active in Civitan and later became man of the year. He was also a member of CAPS and Neighborhood Watch. He was a big fan of Ohio State football, basketball, and was an avid fisherman. He also enjoyed watching boxing and MMA. Jack loved his family and was a good provider. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was loved by all that met him. He adored his three dogs, Annie, Honeybun and Tinkerbell. He also enjoyed working in his yard and spending time with family and friends. Jack is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan, a daughter, Tawni Love and husband, Allen, of Marietta, two sons, Terry Powers and wife, Loretta, of South Carolina and Jay Powers of Marietta, grandchildren, Joelle Loeber, Audra Love, Adrienne Schmidt, Caitlin Love, Robert Powers, Kim Flowers, Chris Pryce and Kayla Hall. He also has nine great grandchildren, a great great grandchild, two brothers, James Yates and wife, Marge, of Marietta, and Robert Powers of Columbus, as well as a special friend, Darlene Powers and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn Sue Harris. Funeral services will be held at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Linda Steelman officiating. Friends may call on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at East Lawn Memorial Park, with full military honors. Donations may be made to CAPS, c/o Marietta Community Foundation, P.O.
