John Jacob Schwendeman

Another WWII veteran has died...John Jacob "Jerry" Schwendeman, 95, Lowell, died Saturday evening, July 2, 2011, in Parkersburg, WV. Born Feb. 26, 1916, at Lowell, OH, he was the son of the late John Andrew and Alice Mary Long Schwendeman. He was a graduate of Lowell High School. Jerry was an Army veteran of WWII, having served with the signal corps in India. He had retired in 1995, as a co-owner of J.A. Schwendeman & Sons Contractors, in Lowell. Jerry was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society. He was a Life Member, and Past Commander of American Legion Post #750, a Life Member of V.F.W. Post #5108 and the 40 et 8. He had served on the Lowell Water Board, was a member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge #477 and the Washington County Homebuilders Association. Jerry's hobbies included fishing, playing cards, gardening and bird watching. On September 1, 1949, he married Mildred Huck, who survives with ten children. Five sons, Kevin (Cindy), Lowell, Terry (Audrey), Lowell, Mark (Mary Jo), Williamstown, WV, Kim (Patti), Lowell, and Greg Schwendeman, US Army, Retired, of Afghanistan; five daughters, Diane (Charles) Palmer, Reno, Sharon (Randy) Fouss, Lowell, Rosanne (Brad) Brooks, Beverly, Marilyn (Dr. Michael) Moses, Parkersburg, WV, and Annette (Brett) Grimm, Concord, NC. Also surviving are 26 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, one brother, Louis (Ann) Schwendeman, of Virginia, and one sister, Marian Hynes, Vienna, WV. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Cecil Schwendeman, and one sister, Ruth Lang. Funeral Liturgy, with Mass, will be celebrated 10:00 am Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, Lowell, with the Rev. Timothy Huffman officiating. Full military rites will be observed at the committal service in the church cemetery. The Schwendeman family will receive guests from 2-8 PM Tuesday, at the Lowell Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, where the Rosary will be prayed at 8:00 PM. Memorials may be made in Jerry's honor to the L-A Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 406, Lowell, OH 45744.
