Wiona S. “Sam” Hoover Anderson, 68, of Whipple, Ohio, passed away on December 9, 2025, at Marietta Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her family.
Sam was born on February 6, 1957, in Killeen, Texas, to Dr. and Mrs. Richard G. Hoover. She was a 1975 graduate of Lewis County High School and attended West Virginia Wesleyan College. Her professional career spanned several decades and included jobs at Community Action; Washington County Court of Common Pleas Juvenile Division, Washington County, Ohio; Boys & Girls Clubs of Washington County, Ohio; Peoples Bank, Lower Salem, Ohio; and Green Acres of Marietta.
Sam was involved in several community and civic organizations, including Ohio River Sternwheel Committees, and she was the first female member of Marietta Noon Lions Club. She also enjoyed sewing, crafting, cooking, baking, driving her side-by-side, and traveling. Most of all, she cherished spending time with her family and friends.
On July 1, 1988, Sam married Richard L. Anderson, who survives. Also, surviving are children Jonah Anderson (Lindsey), Amanda Slaven (Troy), Ryan Anderson (Melanie), and Kacy Anderson (Kyle); grandchildren, Brooke Slaven, Gavin Slaven (Beth), Ryder Slaven, and Emeliah Anderson; great-grandchildren, Beckham Slaven and Iris Wiona Slaven, her namesake; mother, Carolyn E. Hoover; sister, Ramonda Lipscomb (John); numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces.
Sam was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Harold and Evelyn Daugherty; paternal grandparents, Erve and Brenice Hoover; father, Dr. Richard G. Hoover; brother, Richard G. “Rick” Hoover II; and infant son, Richard Byron Adams.
A service to celebrate the life of Wiona S. “Sam” Hoover Anderson will be held at a later date at St. Fork United Methodist Church, Crawford, WV, with burial to follow at Wimer Cemetery, Crawford, WV.
